Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms (optional)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Make the Mashed Potatoes:

    • Boil peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes or until tender.
    • Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
  • Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:

    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4 oval patties.
  • Cook the Patties:

    • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet.
  • Make the Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, add beef broth, soy sauce, and mushrooms (if using).
    • Simmer, then add cornstarch mixed with water if a thicker gravy is desired.
  • Combine and Serve:

    • Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them, and cook for 2–3 minutes.
    • Serve over mashed potatoes with extra gravy on top.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Add finely chopped onions or mushrooms to the patties for added flavor.
  • For creamier mashed potatoes, use heavy cream instead of milk.
