This Footlong Chili Cheese Coney is the ultimate comfort food, featuring a juicy beef hot dog in a toasted bun, topped with rich, flavorful chili, gooey melted cheddar cheese, and crisp onions. Perfect for cookouts, game days, or a fun family meal!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chili:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup water (optional, for desired consistency)

For the Coney Dogs:

  • 4 footlong hot dog buns
  • 4 beef hot dogs (or your favorite variety)
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • Mustard or ketchup (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Chili:

    • In a medium saucepan, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks.
    • Drain any excess fat, then stir in tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
    • If the chili is too thick, add ¼ cup water to adjust the consistency.
    • Simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Cook the Hot Dogs:

    • While the chili simmers, cook the hot dogs using your preferred method:
      • Grill: Cook over medium heat for 4–5 minutes, turning occasionally.
      • Boil: Simmer in hot water for 5 minutes.
      • Pan-Fry: Cook in a skillet over medium heat, turning until heated through.
  • Toast the Buns:

    • Lightly toast the footlong buns in the oven or on a griddle for extra flavor.
  • Assemble the Chili Cheese Coneys:

    • Place each hot dog in a toasted bun.
    • Spoon generous amounts of chili over the hot dogs.
    • Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and finely chopped onions.
    • Add mustard or ketchup, if desired.

  • Serve & Enjoy:

    • Serve immediately while warm, with fries, onion rings, or a crisp side salad.

Notes

  • Simmering the chili longer enhances its flavor and thickens it.
  • Use quality beef hot dogs for the best taste and texture.
  • For extra cheesiness, melt the cheese under a broiler for 1–2 minutes.

  • Spice it up by adding jalapeños or hot sauce.
