Ingredients
Scale
For the Base:
- 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuits
- 3 cups frozen hashbrowns (thawed)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 6 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Sausage Gravy:
- 1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
2. Cook the Sausage Gravy
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it into crumbles, until browned and fully cooked.
- Remove the sausage from the pan and set it aside, leaving about 1-2 tablespoons of grease in the skillet.
- Add butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat.
- Stir in the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until the mixture turns slightly golden.
- Gradually pour in milk, whisking continuously to avoid lumps.
- Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, then continue stirring until the gravy thickens (about 3-5 minutes).
- Stir the cooked sausage back into the gravy and remove it from the heat.
3. Assemble the Casserole
- Open the can of biscuits and cut each biscuit into quarters.
- Spread the biscuit pieces evenly in the greased baking dish.
- Evenly layer the hashbrowns over the biscuits.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour the egg mixture over the casserole.
- Finally, pour the sausage gravy over everything, spreading it out evenly.
4. Bake the Casserole
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the eggs are set.
- Allow the casserole to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use High-Quality Sausage: A good-quality breakfast sausage will enhance the flavor of the dish.
- Don’t Overbake: The casserole should be golden brown but not overly dry.
- Customize Your Cheese: Try using a mix of cheddar, mozzarella, or pepper jack for added flavor.
- Add Vegetables: Bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms can be sautéed and added for extra nutrition.
- Make It Spicy: Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a kick.
